Hi I'm Attorney Scott Murray, with some valuable information on what to do if you're in an auto accident. If you've ever been in an accident, you know how scary it can be.

We urge you to protect yourself by being prepared and knowledgeable about what to do.

First things first. Stay calm. If you think you or anyone else is injured, dial 911 and get medical attention immediately. Remember - your health, well-being and safety come first.

Immediately turn your hazard lights on and don’t move your vehicle unless you're blocking traffic or feel you're in an unsafe position.

Once you're in a safe position, exchange information with the other driver, including name, phone number, vehicle registration, driver's license number and insurance policy information. Do not talk about the accident with the other driver. Call the police and wait until the police arrive to explain what happened.

If there are any witnesses, get their names, addresses and phone numbers also.

If you have a camera or a camera phone, take pictures and sketch a diagram of the scene. It will be important to note any skid marks or other physical evidence including where the cars came to final rest.

After the accident, call your insurance agent or your insurance company to report the crash, and, if any of the vehicles were damaged or anyone was injured, call an attorney who specializes in personal injury to help you navigate through the legal process and make sure your rights are protected.

One important reminder – do not agree to give a recorded statement to anyone including your own insurance company without your attorney there.
