Putting Your Children At Risk - Garage Sale Purchase Warning

Each year, hundreds of defective products are recalled (www.recalls.gov) by the Federal Government. Unfortunately, a high percentage of recalled products are never returned or repaired. Many consumers have either never heard about a recall or have failed to act on a recall.

With the tough economy and as families try to stretch their dollars, many take advantage of bargain deals at yard sales, thrift stores and second hand stores. What you may not know is that people do unknowingly purchase or sell dangerous and recalled items at garage sales or resale shops.

In a 1999 study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission it was discovered that over 69% of all resale shops visited had at least one dangerous or recalled product for sale. These products included: used cribs, recalled playyards, used child safety seats, children's clothing with drawstrings and recalled toys. These same items are often sold in garage sales or donated to these resale shops.

Watch for and be aware of recalled items. If you receive hand-me-downs or buy children's products at second-hand shops or yard sales, it is very important that you check past product recalls to ensure your child's safety and to follow recommended steps.
